PROJECT MENTORING
Margie Caldwell-Gill
THESE KIND WORDS
“Suzanne’s Project Online really pushed me to produce a lot of work in a series. Having
a group to be accountable to on a regular schedule “kept me focused and on task” .
I work alone in my studio, and don’t get an opportunity to get input from other artists,
so, the private Facebook group with the other participating artists supporting my work
and giving suggestions and tips was invaluable. One of the best parts of doing Project
Online was getting feedback from Suzanne throughout the process. Her
insights into what she was seeing in my work helped me get focused on the direction
I wanted to take my work. I would highly recommend the experience.”
”
“When Suzanne announced her plans to give an 4 month on line workshop « Project
Mentoring » in which she would mentor us and encourage us to create a body of
work I was in !!! And, indeed, it was the correct decision! Because of my
enthusiasm and love of art I had a tendency to want to try everything, and as a result
my art lacked focus. In this online class Suzanne had us choose some unifying theme
or project and explore it in depth, in this way pushing our explorations and limits
and at the same time making us create a unified body of work. The artists involved
in this online studio shared their work on line, encouraged and gave each other
support and advice. It was a fabulous experience to get all this support and
mentoring in such a safe environment ! In discussing our work we learned how to
talk about our pieces and our experiments, a task that is sometimes so difficult for
us, artists ! With Suzanne’s mentoring we learned to define our goals! At the end, as
a finale, we presented our work to a board of three outside artists and were able to
get their reaction! A very satisfying experience!
This class had made a big impact on my work. I am now much more focused, and as
a result I am able to create pieces that are more unified. I, actually, now have a body
of work that I am able to present and talk about! I am very grateful to Suzanne for
contributing to my growth as an artist, and I recommend this « Mentoring
Workshop » for artists at any level of their development!”
“I experienced a sharp learning curve during the mentoring program. I learned to write
an artist statement that works well for me in many situations. The critique that
followed the work I produced was thoughtful and validating. The painting I did was not
my best but did lead to further restructuring of paintings done since the mentoring
that has been very well received. Well worth the time and money.”

PROJECT ONLINE MENTORING is an exciting INTERACTIVE LIVE ONLINE and In-studio course of 6 months duration. Students will experience the complete process of deepening their commitment to their own studio practice by creating a project of their choice. This is for a small group of artists only——3 to 5 students. The group will meet on Zoom once a month and individually one-on-one, once twice a month. At the end there will be a final presentation before a small review panel of professional artists.
Each artist will focus on a particular project that they wish to delve into. Artist will create a statement of intention (which can be changed or expanded on during the time of the PROJECT). As part of the artist statement, size and materials and method will be chosen. Artist will do exploratory work around the chosen project and then when a direction is clear, the artist will create a body of 6 to 10 pieces of art. During the 4 months, the artist will keep a journal which will contain, among other things, thoughts, notes, quotes, images, thumbnails, etc., that support the artist intention.
Group sessions will center around sharing progress, difficulties, other artists projects and ways to be skillful in the process for successful completion.
Each Group Session there will be topics presented to help the participants choose a project, how to prepare, how to write the artist statement, how to present themselves in front of the review panel
Also in Group Sessions examples of other artist projects will be shown and discussed
There will be videos and slide shows which participants can review
Group sessions are recorded for replay
During PROJECT there will be a closed Facebook Group where artists can post their progress, interact with other artists in PROJECT.
Participants will develop a presentation of their art and themselves as an artist, including an artist statement.
At the end of the 6 months, the artist will share their PROJECT with the group and two or three invited guest artists who will review and critique each PROJECT.
All meetings will occur in LIVE ONLINE ZOOM (and In-Studio sessions if you live nearby.) The group will create the meeting schedule by consensus.
PROJECT will be limited to no more than 5 participants
